Everybody 03:17
Everybody's got a secret Everybody's got a hope Everybody's got a journey that they're living for Everybody has been broken Everybody's got a bruise Everybody's got a story they ain't telling you In their face, in their body, in their bones, in their blood In their life, in their heart, in their soul, in their gut Ain't nobody been broken like you Everybody has been broken too You will know it when you see it You will feel it when it comes It's the dream in your sleep and it can't be undone It's the light of the fire It's the sting of the flame It's the change in your mind and you're never the same In your face, in your body, in your bones, in your blood In your life, in your heart, in your soul, in your gut Ain't nobody been broken like you Everybody has been broken too Look in the eyes of a stranger Look in the heart of a man Ain't no one out there been broken like you But God knows, we're all broken too Ain't nobody been broken like you Everybody has been broken

She can smell your blood beneath the surface The highways and the backroads in your skin She'll hitch a ride from anywhere/ they all lead to the heart And she's gonna get in She tells you she don't wanna be your lover She says that she just wants to be your friend But once she gets inside you you won't know where she ends And where you begin The Devil's got a hold on me I let her in and now I know she'll never let me be The Devil's got a hold on me Mama, let me go You pick your way across the desert Looking out for every root and every stone But you'd need eyes in the back of your head to see where she's stalking you from She's right beside you every waking moment Her shadow shares an outline with your own And though you know your living may be lonelier than most You are never alone The Devil's got a hold on me Could never take my mind off of the trouble at my feet The Devil's got a hold on me Mama, let me go Let me go You've already proved you'll do anything to save me from myself But I've got one foot in this life and one foot in the next And what's done can't be undone The Devil's got a hold on me I let her in and now she'll never let me be The Devil's got a hold on me Mama, let me go Mama, let me go

about

On the road in January 2022, I met a woman named Bernadette. She asked if I would write her a song for her son. I agreed, thinking that I would be writing something to lift his spirits, or maybe to reassure him of her love in a creative and less conventional way. She then explained to me that her son had died of a fentanyl overdose the summer before.

One of my best friends had lost her brother to an overdose just two months before I met Bernadette, so the issue of drug abuse and misuse and the impact that an addict's behavior has on the addict themselves and on the people who love them was already hitting very close to home.

Bernadette told me all about her son Anthony, his struggles, his successes, his love of humor and his desire to make the world around him a better place. She told me about the stigma surrounding the issue of drug abuse, her fears, her frustrations, the way he made her laugh, and her love for him as a mother. The song took shape, and when it was done, I recorded it and sent it to her. As soon as she heard it, she told me that it was exactly what she had envisioned.. and that, cathartic as it was for her to hear, it was not going to be enough. She wanted to make a whole album so that she could raise money for drug abuse awareness and rehabilitation. She established a nonprofit called "Foundation Joy" to help channel funds to rehab centers and to help those unfamiliar or unaware of the prevalence of these issues understand the dangers of drug abuse on a personal level. The album was born.

"Drug addiction is a worldwide problem. To date, North America continues to experience the highest drug-related mortality rate in the world, accounting for one in four drug-related deaths globally, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime reports.
The number of drug overdose deaths in the United States has more than quintupled in the last 20 years. Rates of overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids other than methadone, which includes fentanyl and fentanyl analogs, increased over 56% from 2019 to 2020. The number of overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids in 2020 was more than 18 times the number in 2013. The latest provisional drug overdose death counts through June 2021 suggest an acceleration of overdose deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic." -CDC.gov
